In a recent report, TuttoMercatoWeb has claimed that Manchester City are eyeing a move for Athletico Paranaense left-back Abner. It is understood that Pep Guardiola’s side are planning to move in for the Brazilian youngster in the summer.
Abner’s Impressive Rise In Brazilian Football Last Season
Abner proved his worth as one of the most influential members of Paranaense’s starting XI as he produced a handful of eye-catching displays on the left side of their defence. The 21-year-old caught the eye by picking up six assists in 41 matches for the Brazilian outfit last season on all fronts.
The South American sensation made a positive impact at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 0.6 shots, 0.8 crosses and 1.4 key passes per 90 minutes in Brasileirao. He even distributed the ball with conviction after completing 82% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Will Abner Be A Good Choice For Manchester City?
Abner is a quick and agile full-back who has proven himself to be a solid defender at the back. He is a decent tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to earn possession back for his side. The Brazilian whizkid is not afraid to put his foot through the ball when needed and can play his way out from the back. He can whip in some dangerous crosses into the opponent’s penalty box and is a powerful striker of the ball.
Abner has got the potential to become a future star at the highest level, so Man City would do well to bring him to the Etihad Stadium during the summer transfer window. At the tender age of 21, he is already good enough to compete with Oleksandr Zinchenko for a regular starting place in Pep Guardiola‘s first team.
Joao Cancelo has become Man City’s preferred choice for the left-back spot this season. However, playing the Portuguese talent in his natural right-back position makes more sense which would free up space for someone as talented as Abner to slot in on the other side as the left-back. All in all, the Brazilian prospect will be a decent choice for the Mancunian giants to consider in the summer as he could grow into a world-class footballer under the expert stewardship of Guardiola.
