In a recent report, The Telegraph claimed that Everton are showing interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli. It is understood that the Toffees are set to rival Newcastle United in pursuit of the English playmaker.
Alli’s Difficult Campaign In English Football This Season
Alli has endured another tough season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after failing to make himself a regular starter in the Premier League. The 25-year-old has made 18 appearances for Spurs during this campaign, finding the back of the net twice and grabbing one assist across all competitions.
The Milton Keynes-born talent has struggled to impress with his attacking productivity as he is averaging 0.4 shots, 0.2 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in the English top-flight. However, he has been tidy when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 78.9% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Alli A Good Fit For Everton?
On his day, Alli can be a delight to watch as he can make some intelligent runs with the ball towards the opponent’s penalty area. However, those days have been few and far between for the English talent this season.
The England international has failed to find consistency at North London this season despite some signs of his promise over the past few months. Alli is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or function as a left-sided wide player if needed. He remains a good dribbler with the ball and has worked hard on improving the defensive side of his game.
At 25, Alli would believe that his best years are ahead of him. However, he would be a risky option for the Merseyside outfit because of his poor injury record and recent struggles in Premier League football. All in all, Alli won’t be a good fit for Everton this month, so they should think about bringing a more proven midfielder to Goodison Park during this January transfer period.
