West Ham United faced off against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier tonight as they looked to grind out a positive result on the road. The Hammers made a decent start to the game but conceded the opening goal in the 29th minute when Steven Bergwijn found the back of the net with a low strike. The visiting side responded immediately as Jarrod Bowen netted the equaliser just three minutes later. However, Spurs once again got their noses ahead in the 34th minute via Lucas Moura’s goal. West Ham went into the half-time break 2-1 down on the scoreline.
Both sides fought tooth and nail in the second half as David Moyes’ men crashed to a 2-1 defeat which knocked them out of the EFL Cup.
Let’s take a look at how each West Ham player performed during the match against Spurs.
GK: Alphonse Areola – 6/10
The Hammers keeper made a few solid stops but will be disappointed after letting in two goals in the first half.
CB: Ben Johnson – 6/10
He looked good at times but was a bit sloppy when distributing possession out from the back.
CB: Craig Dawson – 6.5/10
Dawson was a dominant presence in the air and made a few crucial interceptions inside his half. However, he won’t be pleased for allowing two goals in the first 45 minutes.
CB: Issa Diop – 6.5/10
Diop cleared his lines when required and won a few 50-50 aerial duels for his team. His good work was not enough for West Ham to avoid defeat.
RM: Harrison Ashby – 6/10
He was always willing to run with the ball at his feet but offered very little in terms of end-product in the final third.
CM: Tomas Soucek – 6.5/10
Soucek used his experience well to anchor the midfield but wasted some decent chances to score.
CM: Declan Rice – 8/10
The English talent won the ball back a couple of times in midfield and made a lot of good runs with the ball in the Tottenham half. He was by far the best West Ham player on the field tonight.
LM: Arthur Masuaku – 7/10
Masuaku defended well inside his half and engineered two inviting chances for his teammates to score.
RAM: Nikola Vlašić – 7/10
He made a few excellent opportunities for others around him and caused a few headaches for the Spurs defenders. However, he got replaced after the hour mark.
LAM: Manuel Lanzini – 6.5/10
Lanzini showed some glimpses of promise but failed to register a goal during his time on the pitch.
ST: Jarrod Bowen – 7.5/10
Bowen was a constant threat inside the Tottenham penalty box and scored his team’s only goal of the game in the 32nd minute.
Substitutes:
LW: Said Benrahma – 6.5/10
He caused some problems for the opposition but was wasteful in the final third.
CAM: Pablo Fornals – 6/10
The Spaniard made one key chance after coming off the bench.
RW: Andriy Yarmolenko – 6/10
He had some lively moments in the game but didn’t do enough to score.
