In a recent report, The Daily Mirror mentioned that Newcastle United have identified Atletico Madrid full-back as a main target for the January transfer window. It is understood that the Magpies boss Eddie Howe wants to strengthen his squad by recruiting the English talent this winter.

Trippier’s Underwhelming Campaign At The Spanish Capital

The 31-year-old is experiencing a lackluster campaign at the Wanda Metropolitano as he has struggled to be consistent with his performances for Atletico down the right flank. Trippier has featured in 15 matches for the Spanish outfit but is yet to score or assist a goal this season on all fronts.

The Bury-born sensation has struggled to give a good account of himself based on his average of 1.2 tackles, 0.7 key passes, 0.7 clearances, 0.4 key passes, 0.6 crosses and 0.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. However, he has distributed the ball relatively well from the right flank, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 79.8% in league football (stats via whoscored).

Is Tripper A Good Choice For Newcastle United?

Trippier has a good work rate and can deliver some inviting crosses from the wide areas. He is a specialist from dead-ball situations but has struggled to perform at a high level for Diego Simeone’s side this season. On his day, the England international can be a solid defender at the back. However, those days have been few and far between for him during this campaign so far.

Maybe a change of scenery to join a club like Newcastle United would be a good career move for Trippier as he could enjoy playing in familiar surroundings back in his homeland. There is no denying that the Atletico talent will be an upgrade over Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth for the right-back position at St. James’ Park.

Eddie Howe has enough experience to get the best out of Trippier if he can get him on board during the January transfer window. Hence, he will be a solid choice for the Magpies to pursue next year as long as the player can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football.
