Chelsea will be aiming retribution as they take on Juventus on Tuesday. The Blues had lost the reverse fixture 1-0 back in Turin, and are currently trailing the Old Lady by three points in Group H. They will be keen on finishing in the first place if they are to avoid playing against a better team in Round of 16, meaning a win could be imperative for Thomas Tuchel’s men this midweek.
Juventus, on the other hand, have performed exceedingly well in the UEFA Champions League, winning all of their four matches so far. The Old Lady have not played well in Serie A, but a draw could be enough for them to secure the top spot in the group. However, the visitors will be expecting a far tougher contest compared to the reverse fixture given Chelsea’s recent run of form.
Talking Tactics
Chelsea
Tuchel is unlikely to shift away from his tried and tested 3-4-2-1 formation that will look to assert pressure on the Juventus defence. The wingbacks should provide the width going forward while the onus of breaking up the opposition play will be on the two central midfielders. At the same time, the two advanced midfielders may look to drop deeper to help with the transition, though it will be interesting to see whether Tuchel opts for pace or technique.
Juventus
Juventus will have a simple game plan this midweek, knowing a draw will be enough to seal the top spot in the group. Hence, they are more than likely to defend and play on the counter, with coach Massimiliano Allegri set to re-deploy the 4-4-2. The two banks of four will hope to cover Wojciech Szczesny in goal while the two attackers could be used as runners on the counter.
Team News
Chelsea
Chelsea are missing some of their key players heading into this game, including Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian has returned to training but is unlikely to feature against Juventus, although fellow forward Timo Werner could start on the bench. Apart from them, Mateo Kovacic remains out with a hamstring problem while Marcos Alonso remains a doubt.
Juventus
Juventus have their own set of absentees including former Arsenal playmaker Aaron Ramsey. The likes of Federico Bernardeschi, Paulo Dybala and Giorgio Chiellini are doubts heading into this game due to their respective fitness issues.
