The Daily Express has recently reported that Tottenham Hotspur are among several clubs hoping to land Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger. It is understood that Spurs along with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are all watching the German defender’s situation closely as the Blues try to tie him down to a new contract.
Rudiger’s Outstanding Form At Stamford Bridge This Season
Rudiger has made a solid start to this campaign by firmly established himself as a regular feature in Thomas Tuchel’s defence. The 28-year-old has been involved in ten matches for the Blues this season, scoring one goal in the process in multiple competitions.
The Berlin-born defensive ace has performed well to average 1.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 2.9 clearances, 0.9 shots and 0.6 key passes per game in this Premier League campaign. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from the back after completing 86.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Rudiger’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of this campaign. Hence, it is no wonder that Spurs are showing interest in capturing his signature either on a cut-price deal in January or at the end of this campaign if Chelsea fail to extend his contract by then.
Is Rudiger A Good Fit For Nuno Espirito Santo?
Rudiger has transformed himself into a dominant centre-half as he can use his strong 1.90m frame to overpower the opposition attackers and win some important aerial duels on the defensive end of the field. He can time his tackles well to secure the ball back for his side and doesn’t mind eating up a lot of ground to clear his lines when required.
The German international can even contribute by scoring the odd goal as he usually strikes the ball with a lot of venom and is a potent threat from indirect set-pieces. He is also a tidy passer of the ball which makes him a perfect fit for Nuno Espirito Santo’s style of play at the North London club.
Rudiger will undeniably add a lot of quality to Spurs’ backline and could serve as an upgrade over Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sánchez and Joe Rodon at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Hence, Nuno Espirito Santo should think about engineering a cut-price move to land Rudiger during the winter transfer period.
