According to Ekrem Konur, Tottenham want to extend the deal for Hugo Lloris. The goalkeeper’s current contract in North London expires at the end of the season, but it appears the Lilywhites are seeking a potential two-year contract extension. Lloris himself is believed to be loyal towards Spurs, but it remains to be seen whether he would pen a new deal with the club.

Hugo Lloris’ Long Spell At Tottenham

Formerly of OGC Nice, Hugo Lloris is currently one of the longest-serving players at Tottenham and one of the most experienced players in the Premier League. He joined the club way back in 2012 for a fee of just €12.6 million.

The deal has proved to be a bargain for the North London giants, as Lloris has established himself as one of the best in the Premier League over the years. Indeed, the Frenchman has already raked up almost 400 competitive appearances for Spurs to his name while representing France 132 times.

Lloris has not won anything significant with Tottenham, but he did captain the French team that secured the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The 34-year-old has truly become a club legend, and his leadership, shot-stopping skills and experience were vital in helping Spurs enjoy a successful era under Mauricio Pochettino.

Lloris narrowly missed out on the UEFA Champions League title in 2019. But having been playing consistently at the highest level of football for so many years, he has indeed been a great servant for Tottenham Hotspur.

Is It Time To Move On?

Tottenham Hotspur clearly haven’t had a great spell over the past couple of years and are currently in a transitional process under Nuno Espirito Santo, so losing an experienced head like Hugo Lloris could be a massive blow for the club.

But at the same time, it is perhaps fair to point out that the Frenchman certainly hasn’t been as consistent as he was previously. Ageing has had an impact on his performances, and there have always been question marks over the 34-year-old’s ability to act as a sweeper-keeper and settle in quickly to the modern role of goalkeeping.

Moreover, the summer arrival of Pierluigi Gollini suggests that Tottenham themselves were anticipating a change. And although Lloris has started the season with three back to back clean sheets, it is definitely an ideal time for Spurs to pass the torch and release the Frenchman next summer.

It remains to be seen whether Gollini has what it takes to replace the veteran, but Lloris’ departure could do the club a lot of good in their quest to restore the lost glory.
