Manchester United clashed heads with Southampton at St. Mary’s earlier this evening as they looked to secure all three points on the second day of the campaign. Che Adams opened the scoreline as his shot took a major deflection off Fred to end up in the back of the net; however, Mason Greenwood equalized just 10 minutes into the second half to make it 1-1 for the visitors.
Let’s take a look at how each Manchester United player fared during the match against the Saints.
Manchester United Players Rated In Draw Vs Southampton
David De Gea 8
The Spanish shot-stopper made numerous crucial saves to keep his side in the game, especially the Adam Armstrong shot in the closing stages of the match.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6
The Englishman misplaced passes left, right, and centre. On top of that, he produced absolutely nothing going forward.
Victor Lindelof 6
The Swedish centre-back looked a bit nervous in high-pressure situations.
Harry Maguire 5
The skipper lost possession of the ball in some of the most dangerous positions of the pitch. The Southampton frontmen came quite close to capitalising on his mistakes at the back, but thankfully David de Gea was there to save him from any embarrassment.
Luke Shaw 5
The 26-year-old wing-back hardly made his signature overlapping runs to support Paul Pogba down the left flank. Defensively, he wasn’t too impressive either.
Fred 3
The Brazilian midfielder put up one of his worst performances in the United jersey tonight. His forward passes never reached the intended target, and he was getting dispossessed way too easily time and again.
Nemanja Matic 4
The Serbian international was way too sluggish for the role he was given tonight. He miserably failed to stop the opposition counterattacks and looked completely worn out by the 70th minute.
Paul Pogba 8
Manchester United’s most impressive player of the pitch by a mile.
The Frenchman kept on creating chances for his teammates from the very first minute of the game as he utilised his free role extremely well. He even got himself the assist from Mason Greenwood’s equalizer.
Bruno Fernandes 6
The Portuguese maestro’s ball distribution was quite decent, but he lacked the creative intent in the opposition half. One would expect more from a player of his calibre.
Mason Greenwood 8
The 19-year-old scored the equalizing goal for the visitors and looked quite dangerous over the course of the 90 minutes.
Anthony Martial 4
At a point, it seemed as if the France international was playing against his own team as he kept wasting every chance that came to him. Despite the presence of some of the world-class midfielders behind him, his link-up play was non-existent.
SUBSTITUTES (Manchester United Players Rated In Draw Vs Southampton)
Jadon Sancho 6
His penetrating runs into the opposition half were impressive.
Scott McTominay 6
Provided his side with some much-needed energy at the centre of the park.
Jesse Lingard N/A
It was too late when he came on.
