In a recent print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport mentioned that West Ham United are eyeing a move for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu this summer. It is understood that the Hammers are looking for a new defender and have identified the Japan international as a potential target during this summer transfer period (transcripted and translated by Sport Witness).

Tomiyasu’s Solid Campaign In Italian Football

The 22-year-old caught the eye with his performances in Italian football last season when he enjoyed a decent run of form at the heart of Bologna’s backline. Tomiyasu was involved in 33 matches for the Italian outfit in the previous campaign, scoring two goals and picking up four assists in the process across various competitions.

The 23-time Japan international proved himself to be a valuable presence in Siniša Mihajlović’s defence as he averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He was also tidy when distributing possession from the back after making 82.1% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Tomiyasu has taken great strides towards improving his overall game over the past 12 months, so the Hammers will do well to lure him to the London Stadium before the start of the new campaign. However, the Japanese sensation’s current contract with Bologna is set to run out in the summer of 2024 which could make it difficult for West Ham to land him this summer.

Should The Hammers Get Tomiyasu On Board This Summer?

Tomiyasu can time his tackles well and can make some crucial interceptions for his side. He can utilize his robust 1.88m frame to overpower the opposition and win some important aerial duels at the back. The Japan international doesn’t take too many chances with his clearances and is also willing to put his body on the line to block a goal-bound shot.

The Bologna star is a player on the rise and has the potential to become a world-class centre-half someday which makes him a worthy target for the Hammers to pursue this summer. Tomiyasu will undeniably add some much-needed depth to David Moyes’ defensive department and could grow into a top performer at the London Stadium in the coming seasons.

Hence, the East London club would be wise to orchestrate a move to secure the services of the Japanese talent during this summer transfer window. At 22, the best is yet to come from Tomiyasu but there is no doubt that he will offer some healthy competition for Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna for a regular place in Moyes’ starting XI next season.
