If a report from Dutch outlet De Telegraaf (as quoted by Glasgow Live) is believed to be true, Rangers have tabled a bid for Heerenveen star Joey Veerman. The 22-year-old midfield sensation enjoyed an exquisite Eredivisie season and therefore, grabbed the attention of a host of suitors including the Scottish champions.
The Dutchman, however, is not happy with Heerenveen’s stance over a potential summer transfer. He is eager to experience a new challenge elsewhere, but the Superfriezen rejected a €5m bid from Hellas Verona as the Serie A side were not even close to his whopping €12m valuation.
This has annoyed him a lot and he did not hide his frustration either while discussing his future.
“I think the Italians have made a very reasonable offer, but when I hear what Heerenveen is asking, it can sometimes be a very different story.
“Ten to twelve million? I think that’s crazy.”
Although manager Johnny Jansen opted to hand Veerman a start in their pre-season friendly against Maccabi Tel-Aviv, the uncertainty is looming large with clubs circling like vultures to secure his services. Rangers have tabled a bid in the region of €4.5m which, however, is likely to be knocked back as well for being lower than Verona’s offer.
Having progressed through the youth ranks of FC Volendam, the youngster got promoted to their senior set-up back in 2016. He spent three years in Eerste Divisie before plying his trade in Abe Lenstra a couple of summers ago. Veerman was handed an instant starting status in Eredivisie and his game kept on improving with each passing week.
What He Would Bring In The Gers’ Midfield
Meanwhile, the last season turned out to be a scintillating one as Veerman fired in 9 goals and laid on 11 more across competitions (stats via Transfermarket) despite operating as a deep-lying playmaker. He has also impressed with his work ethic, passing, dribbling, down the middle runs as well as set-piece attributes. The attacking intent, creative spark and finishing expertise earned him an anchor role in the centre of the pitch.
Why Rangers Must Step Up The Chase For Veerman
The Gers have roped in John Lundstram and Nnamdi Ofoborh on Bosman transfers but, at the same time, are sweating over the future of Glen Kamara. The midfield maestro is drawing interest from Premier League, whereas the persistent injury problems have cast doubts on the availability of Ryan Jack week in week out. Scott Arfield is way past his prime and over-reliance on 36-year-old Steven Davis might backfire midway through the season. Steven Gerrard is smart enough to predict the gamble and should step up the chase for the wantaway Heerenveen ace.
