According to RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi, Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Marcus Thuram. The Borussia Monchengladbach forward is expected to depart Borussia Park in the summer following a disappointing campaign. It appears the Lilywhites are the front-runners, with Thuram being identified as a potential replacement for Harry Kane, who is unsettled and is likely to leave north London.
Marcus Thuram’s Spell At Gladbach
Marcus Thuram, son of the revered Lilian Thuram, joined Gladbach in 2019. He was brought in by Marco Rose, who wanted an upgrade over the wide attacking duo of Patrick Herrmann and Ibrahima Traore.
Thuram and Gladbach haven’t had to look back since, with the player establishing himself as a real star in the Bundesliga. During his debut season in Germany, the attacker racked up ten goals and eight assists, helping the Foals attain a top-four finish and a place in the UEFA Champions League.
The recently concluded 2020/21 campaign was a bit difficult one for both, with Thuram struggling with a lack of first-team opportunities due to his diminishing form. He struggled to make an impact when given the opportunities, so Rose largely used the Frenchman as an impact sub.
The move worked out rather well, as Thuram ended the campaign with 15 goal involvements. Gladbach, though, struggled a lot, notably missing out on European football with an eighth-placed finish.
Is Thuram A Good Option For Spurs?
Marcus Thuram is a left-winger by trade, but he is pretty much a centre forward who has a lot of versatility and speed. He can be ideally compared to Son Heung-Min, although the Frenchman does have a lot more pace and physicality.
At the same time, Thuram lacks balance and is not as useful as Son in tight spaces. It is why the attacker would often struggle in breaching a low defensive block. His feisty yet dynamic presence does indeed make him quite a good impact player.
As far as Tottenham are concerned, Marcus Thuram might not be a bad option at all. The 23-year-old has everything it takes to thrive in the Premier League, particularly with his ideal mixture of pace and power.
That said, Thuram is not a direct replacement for Harry Kane. He simply doesn’t have the creativity or the scoring talent of the England international.
The Gladbach forward, though, could be an ideal replacement for someone like Bale and might solve Tottenham’s problems on the right-hand side of the attack – making him a viable option for the club.
