In a recent interview with Football Insider, ex-England striker Kevin Phillips has backed Newcastle United to seal a move for Danny Rose this summer after the player was released by Tottenham Hotspur last month. Phillips said,

“It wouldn’t surprise me if somebody like Newcastle offered him a year.

“I am sure he could still do a job and he will be fit enough I imagine. I think you could get a good couple of seasons out of him because he is not really that old.

“The only question is whether he still has that hunger and desire to play week in, week out in the Premier League. He needs to want to challenge himself again.

“I could see him going to a Newcastle or one of the clubs coming up from the Championship.

“He is still capable of playing in the Premier League though, 100 per cent.”

Rose’s Growing Struggles At North London This Season

Rose endured a frustrating season with Spurs as he failed to make any competitive appearances for them in senior football. The Doncaster-born talent only made two appearances for the North London outfit in the Premier League 2, picking up one assist in the process.

Despite his recent struggles, the 30-year-old has got a wealth of experience at the highest level of English football. Rose has participated in 194 league matches, registering nine goals and 23 assists in his career so far.

Should The Magpies Snap Rose Up This Summer?

Rose is blessed with decent pace under his belt and can make some quick sprints with the ball down the left-wing. He is a good crosser of the ball that helps him pick up his fair share of assists as a full-back. The English sensation is a solid defender when isolated in a 1v1 footrace with the opposition inside his half. However, frequent injuries have derailed his career, so there are some serious question marks over his long-term worth as a footballer.

Steve Bruce should only consider listening to Phillips’ advice by sealing a move for Rose if he is planning to offer the player a short-term contract. Rose has still got a lot of unfinished business in the Premier League, so joining the Magpies could be a tempting move for him as it will give him the chance to shine in top-flight football once again next season.

The former Tottenham left-back has got the experience and hunger to offer some serious competition for Jamal Lewis who has struggled to be consistent as Bruce’s first-choice left-back over the past ten months. Thus, the Tyneside giants should think about snapping Rose up before the start of the new campaign as he will be a good, low-risk acquisition for them in this off-season.
