In a recent report, The Sun has claimed that Newcastle United are set to open contract talks with Jacob Murphy who is attracting interest from Burnley, Watford and Rangers this summer. It is understood that the English wide player’s current contract runs out at the end of this campaign, so the Magpies are trying to tie him down to a new deal to fend off interest from other top-flight clubs during this summer transfer window (via The Sun).

Murphy’s Impressive Form In English Football This Season

Murphy is having a solid season with the Tyneside giants and has managed to establish himself as a key member of Steve Bruce’s senior squad. The 26-year-old has been involved in 26 matches for Newcastle this term, registering three goals and three assists in multiple competitions.

The former Norwich City youngster has caught the eye by influencing the game at both ends of the field as he is averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 1.2 shots, 0.7 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in this Premier League campaign. However, he needs to work on improving his accuracy when distributing the ball based on his pass success rate of 69.1% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).

Murphy finally seems to have found his feet at St. James’ Park, so it is only logical for him to continue with his favourite club if he gets a chance to stay beyond the end of this campaign.

Why Bruce Should Keep Hold Of Murphy For The Long-Run

Murphy is a quick and agile winger who loves to take on his marker and can beat them with pace out on the flanks. He can also strike the ball accurately and with power when afforded time and space by the opposition.

Plus, the English sensation possesses the vision to pick out a decisive pass in the attacking end of the field. However, he needs to work on improving his strength and finishing ability if he wants to become a top performer in his position someday.

At 26, Murphy is only going to get better when he enters his prime in the coming season, so the Magpies would be wise to make him a fresh offer in the hopes of securing his long-term future at Tyneside. The London-born wide player has already shown that he is good enough to feature in the Premier League week in week out. Therefore, Bruce should try everything in his power to convince Murphy to stay at Newcastle and become a star player at St. James’ Park in the years to come.
