Borussia Dortmund slumped to a late 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in their first-leg Champions League quarter-final clash. It was an unlucky game for the Black and Yellows who were wrongly denied a goal in the first half thanks to some clueless referring and conceded a late goal to narrowly lose the away tie.

Borussia Dortmund Player Ratings Vs Manchester City

Marwin Hitz 6/10

Marwin Hitz couldn’t have done much to save any of the goals scored by Manchester City. However, one would feel that he should have been a bit more competent in the build-up.

Mateu Morey 6.5/10

Mateu Morey did not have a great game at all, struggling to impose his presence on the far side. His defensive positioning, however, was solid for the most part and it was evident particularly after the introduction of Thomas Meunier.

Manuel Akanji 7.5/10

Manuel Akanji was one of the most impressive players in the whole game as he looked quite composed on the ball, even marching forward with it at times. Had nervy moments but never in trouble.

Mats Hummels 7/10

Mats Hummels had a mixed game at the heart of the BVB backline. His game-reading qualities were invaluable for the away side but the veteran centre-back was guilty of dropping too deep and playing attackers onside, including in the build-up that led to the Phil Foden winner.

Raphael Guerreiro 7/10

Raphael Guerreiro’s influence from the far side was restricted due to Manchester City’s attacking prowess. The left-back still managed to thread some nice forward passes during the game.

Emre Can 4/10

Emre Can’s error ruined an otherwise sound performance from Dortmund. He was poor in passing and possession, in general. Does not deserve to be played in midfield against a top side.

Mahmoud Dahoud 7/10

Mahmoud Dahoud had good moments, especially in the build-up as his ball-carrying quality was useful. He did look selfish at times and took too much time on the ball.

Jude Bellingham 8/10

Jude Bellingham was by far the best player for Borussia Dortmund this evening. The young 17-year-old was an absolute spark in midfield, offering support both offensively and defensively. He was also robbed of a goal by the referee before initiating the sequence of play that led to Marco Reus’ equaliser.

Ansgar Knauff 6/10

Ansgar Knauff made his starting debut against Manchester City, that too in the Champions League. Showed his pace but lacked the physicality.

Marco Reus 7.5/10

Marco Reus worked hard throughout the game, as usual, looking for opening throughout the course of the game. Deserved the late goal but the captain was let down by the poor Can and Meunier.

Erling Haaland 7/10

Erling Haaland had a quiet game but looked very sharp when given the chance. He train-wrecked Ruben Dias once while registering the assist for the Reus goal.

Giovanni Reyna 5/10

Offered nothing to the table after replacing Knauff around the hour mark. Borussia Dortmund were certainly missing a certain Jadon Sancho.

Thomas Delaney 6/10

Thomas Delaney offered the energy in the second line of press. A late substitute.

Thomas Meunier 0/10

Helped Manchester City win the game with his terrible judgement and defensive positioning. Does not deserve to play at this level.
