Le10Sport has recently provided an update on Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva’s future. It is believed that the Blues are happy with the Brazilian defender’s contributions in his debut season at Stamford Bridge thus far and are convinced to keep him at the club for another season by offering him a one-year extension (via Le10Sport).

Silva’s Injury-Ravaged Season At Chelsea So Far

Silva has endured an injury-plagued campaign at West London after missing several matches for his current employers over the past eight months. The Rio de Janeiro-born talent has been involved in 21 matches for the Blues this term, netting two goals and picking up three yellow cards across all fronts.

However, the 36-year-old deserves a lot of plaudits for being consistent with his defensive contributions as he is averaging 1.0 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 3.7 clearances per game in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Silva has been tidy with his ball-distribution out from the back, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 93.1% in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).

The Brazilian sensation is currently in the last legs of his playing career, so there are some concerns over whether he will be able to maintain his high standards and stay healthy if Chelsea decide to keep him at the English capital for another season.

What Are The Brazil International’s Best Attributes?

Silva is currently amongst the slowest players in Tuchel’s squad but can still be effective with his defensive performances on the field. He is a natural leader who can pass the ball accurately out from defence.

More importantly, the 89-time Brazil international can still be an excellent defender when he is playing with confidence and is part of a well-drilled defensive set-up. Tuchel has shown time and again that he can get the best out of Silva both during his time with Paris Saint-Germain and now at Chelsea.

Should Tuchel Keep Silva At Chelsea Beyond This Summer?

Hence, the Blues head coach would be wise to keep the Brazilian defensive veteran at Stamford Bridge beyond the end of this campaign. Silva could still play an influential role for the West Londoners both on and off the field. Even though there might be a significant decline in his game, the Brazilian star can still act as a huge source of motivation for the younger players in Tuchel’s match-day squad.
