In a recent report, Liverpool Echo has claimed that Everton are keeping a keen eye on Brighton and Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey. It is believed that the Seagulls youngster is on the Toffees’ radar as he is one of the options Carlo Ancelotti is looking at to replace Seamus Coleman at Goodison Park in the long-run (via Liverpool Echo).
Lamptey’s Season Of Mixed Emotions At Brighton
Lamptey is having an up and down campaign at the American Express Community Stadium as he has put some eye-catching displays on the right side of Graham Potter’s defence. However, he missed a major chunk of this season because of a hamstring injury.
The 20-year-old has participated in 11 matches for the Seagulls this term, netting one goal and securing two assists in all competitions. Lamptey has performed well to contribute at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 0.5 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even taken care of the ball relatively well when distributing it out from the back after making 78.1% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Lamptey is currently under contract at Brighton until the summer of 2025, so Potter has no urgent reason to cash in on him, which could make it difficult for Everton to get their man.
What Will The English Right-Back Bring To Goodison Park?
Lamptey is blessed with decent pace and can make some darting runs with the ball out on the right-wing. He is a tough-tackling defender and has shown the hunger to win possession back for his team. The English youngster is quick enough to pull off some lung-bursting recovering runs at the back. At 20, he has the potential to improve with each season, so it makes sense for the Toffees to consider engineering a move for him as he will be a good long-term replacement for Seamus Coleman, who has already entered the twilight years of his playing career.
An up-and-coming full-back like Lamptey would be a welcome addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s match-day squad as he has what it takes to secure a permanent starting berth at Merseyside as long as he can avoid getting injured. The English sensation will add more pace and steel to the Everton backline that has shipped in 33 goals in 24 league matches in the Premier League this season.
However, as mentioned earlier, arranging a move for Lamptey will be easier said than done. The Seagulls have no reason to give up one of their most promising young players when he is on the rise and developing into a regular starter at the Amex.
