Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side secured their first three points of the new Premier League season after picking up a vital 2-0 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium. The home side never really managed to get a grasp of the game, and the assertive attacking from the Magpies was enough to force gaps in the West Ham back-line. Callum Wilson opened the scoring with a solid poacher’s finish in the box, before Jeff Hendrick put the icing on the cake with a blistering strike into the roof of the net. The win temporarily puts the Tyneside club in second place on the league table, albeit with several teams yet to play in this gameweek.

Karl Darlow – 6

The stand-in shot-stopper made a couple of smart saves and some good collections as well. Fortunately wasn’t called into action on too many instances by the West Ham attackers.

Javi Manquillo – 6.5

The full-back showed good intent to get forward and try to make things happen in attack. Despite being called upon quite a bit defensively, it was his cross that led to Wilson’s goal on the night.

Federico Fernandez – 7

The defender was on top of his game tonight as he managed to keep the threat of the West Ham attackers at arm’s length. Some vital tackles in defence and never looked flustered under pressure.

Jamaal Lascelles – 7

The big centre-half didn’t allow Michail Antonio any space to run into as he commandeered the back-line very efficiently. Won most of the aerial balls that were played into the box as well.

Jamal Lewis – 6.5

The Newcastle United debutant made some good forward runs and delivered a couple of neat balls into the box too. Was forced to track back quite a bit though and was beaten on a couple of occasions.

Jeff Hendrick – 7.5

Hendrick was handed his debut by Steven Bruce tonight, and it’s safe to say that the versatile winger repaid his trust. Worked hard off the ball, set up Wilson’s strike and scored one himself late on as well.

Jonjo Shelvey – 7.5

The Englishman put in a solid shift in the Magpies’ engine room tonight as he controlled the tempo of the game with quick passing and movement. Delivered some neat corners as well.

Issac Hayden – 7

The midfielder moved the ball around with confidence and used his physicality well for the most part too. Composed with the ball at his feet and tried to create attacking inroads with his passing.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 7.5

The trickster showed off his silky feet and trickery on various instances during that tie. Extremely direct in his approach as usual but wasn’t able to find too many spaces in the West Ham box.
