In a recent report, Marca has claimed that Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez is a subject of interest from Qatar this summer. It is believed that the Spanish playmaker is now considering his future at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium amid interest from Qatar as well as Napoli and Tottenham Hotspur during this summer transfer period (via Marca).

Vazquez’s Lacklustre Form In Spanish Football Last Season

Vazquez has less than a year remaining on his current deal with Los Blancos, so Zinedine Zidane will have to cash in on him now or else risk losing him for free next summer. The 29-year-old has proven himself to be a useful squad player at the Spanish capital and has done well to win multiple trophies with the Madrid giants thus far.

The A Coruna-born wing wizard participated in 23 matches for the Spanish champions in the previous campaign, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists in multiple competitions. Vazquez struggled to find consistency with his performances last season when he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in La Liga. At least, he took care of the ball well when interchanging possession with his teammates at the centre of the park as evident from his pass success rate of 83.5% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

It seems like Vazquez could be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu. However, the recent financial crisis has increased Zidane’s need to retain most of his squad players including the Spaniard as the Real Madrid head coach doesn’t have the license to go and bring in new players this summer.

What Does The Nine-Time Spanish International Offer On The Field?

Vazquez is a moderately-paced wide player who works hard in providing adequate defensive cover for his full-back partner out on the wide areas. The Spaniard has got the eye to pick out a killer pass inside the opponent’s penalty area. He is also proficient at making some driving runs down the right flank, but needs to be more productive in terms of goal-scoring at the decisive end of the pitch.

The Spanish international can play a decent squad role for any top-flight club in Europe, but maybe a switch to Qatar could offer him a fresh challenge as well as boost his finances in the process. Zidane does not need to retain Vazquez’s services beyond this summer as he has enough depth in his attacking department despite the recent departure of James Rodriguez, who joined Everton earlier this summer.

Should Los Blancos Cut Vazquez Loose This Summer?

The Madrid giants have currently got Rodrygo, Isco, Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior and Marco Asensio fighting for a place on the wings in Zidane’s starting XI. Hence, the reigning champions of Spain can afford to ship Vazquez out of the Bernabeu before the summer transfer window comes to a halt in October.
