German news outlet Kicker has recently stated that Liverpool are inching closer towards a summer move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer. The Spanish playmaker is looking for a new adventure with the Reds ‘getting closer and closer’ to signing him in this off-season (via Kicker). It is believed that both clubs are in contact over a potential move during this summer transfer window, but are yet to agree on a transfer fee for the player.

Thiago’s Excellent Season At The Allianz Arena

Thiago is enjoying another productive season at Bavaria after helping his side reach the UEFA Champions League final following Bayern’s dominant 3-0 win over Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday night. The Bundesliga champions have got a date with destiny as they will now face off against Paris Saint-Germain this weekend with Thiago hoping to get his second Champions League winner’s medal of his career (having previously won one at Barcelona).

The 29-year-old has featured in 39 matches for Hans-Dieter Flick’s side this term, netting three goals and securing two assists in various competitions. The Italy-born player has flourished in a holding midfield role alongside Leon Goretzka and has done well to average 2.3 tackles, 2.0 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 0.7 shots, 1.0 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in the German top tier and the Champions League this season.

He has even proven his worth a world-class ball-distributor after completing 90.7% of his attempted passes in league and European football (stats via whoscored).

What Will The Experienced Midfielder Add To Jurgen Klopp’s Side?

Thiago is a gifted passer of the ball and can make a few quick plays around him using his vision and silky touches in midfield. The Spanish maestro has also provided adequate protection for his teammates at the back. He has the tenacity to close the opponent down and earn possession back for his side. Plus, his incredible ball control and dribbling ability enable him to make a few driving runs in the opposition half.

Will Thiago Be A Wise Choice For The Reds?

A complete midfielder like Thiago could turn out to be an intelligent buy for the Premier League champions as they try to defend their league crown in the upcoming campaign. Thiago will add more stability to the Liverpool midfield and would be a significant creative influence alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson at Anfield in the coming seasons if Klopp can successfully lure him to Merseyside this summer.

At 29, Thiago has still got a few years left in his locker to play at a high level, which is why the Reds should orchestrate a move for him before the transfer window slams shut in October. The Spaniard’s experience and winning mentality will only make the Reds stronger next season as they try to maintain their superiority at the summit of English football.
