According to a recent report by La Opinion, West Ham United are ready to launch a $10m move to acquire the services of River Plate right-back Gonzalo Montiel this summer. The same source has also stated that the Hammers are now prepared to push hard for the Argentine defender having all but securing their top-flight status for another season following their 3-1 victory over Watford earlier this month.
Montiel’s Excellent Form In Argentine Football
The 23-year-old has experienced another impressive campaign in the Argentine Superliga after putting in a series of consistent performances on the right side of Marcelo Gallardo’s backline. He has made 20 appearances for the Argentine giants this term, picking up three assists and four yellow cards on all fronts which highlight his creative influence and combative nature in the opposition half.
Montiel has proven himself to be a capable asset in the Argentine top-flight based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 0.7 shots, 1.1 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in league football this season (stats via whoscored).
The talented full-back has represented the Argentine national side in four senior matches but is waiting to score his first goal for his country. Maybe a move to the Premier League could offer him the platform to earn a regular place in Lionel Scaloni’s squad in the years to come.
What Will The Argentine Defensive Ace Add To David Moyes’ Team?
Montiel can use his pace to make some darting runs down the right flank. He is proficient at getting to the byline and has proven himself to be a reliable source for goals in the attacking third. The South American full-back is also a capable defender inside his half as he can make a few crucial interceptions and last-gasp clearances for his side.
Recruiting a full-back of Montiel’s all-round ability will be a welcome addition to the Hammers squad ahead of the new season. He will not only add some bite and steel to the West Ham backline but also improve the overall depth of their squad. At 23, Montiel has his peak years ahead of him which the East London outfit could look to benefit from in the coming seasons.
The Argentine could serve as an ideal long-term replacement for Pablo Zabaleta. He will also be a decent upgrade over Ryan Fredericks at the London Stadium in the upcoming campaign. However, the jury is still out on whether Montiel can cope with the physical nature and high intensity of English football if Moyes can lure him to East London when the transfer window reopens later this summer.
