Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side fell to a shocking 1-0 defeat against mid-table outfit Southampton tonight, as a first-half goal from Che Adams turned out to be the difference between the teams. The former Birmingham City man was yet to open his Premier League account since making a move to the St.Mary’s, and he did it in sensational style by catching Ederson off his line and smashing in a curler from 40 yards. Despite extended periods of Manchester City pressure, they just couldn’t find the final touch in the Southampton box, owing to some determined defending from the Saints’ back-line.

Manchester City Player Ratings Vs Southampton

Ederson – 6

The talented stopper was unfortunately caught off his line for the Southampton goal tonight, as Che Adams’ effort looped in over his head. Made a couple of decent stops along the way though.

Joao Cancelo – 6.5

The full-back was confident in possession for the most part but wasn’t at his penetrative best while going forward. Linked up play well down his flank and defended without any real drama.

Eric Garcia – 6

The youngster played some good passes out from his position at the back and looked comfortable with the ball at his feet too. Misplaced a few passes though and looked somewhat shaky at times.

Aymeric Laporte – 6

The dynamic central defender was far from his best tonight as he was caught in possession on a couple of occasions. Moved the ball around well but didn’t offer the usual sense of security at the back.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 6

The versatile Ukrainian spent a majority of the fixture in the Southampton half but wasn’t able to produce too much quality in the final third. Got caught on the ball for the Saints’ goal on the night.

David Silva – 7

The Spanish veteran linked up play effectively all through the fixture, and even went one-on-one with McCarthy in the second half, albeit without scoring. Looked supremely composed on the ball.

Fernandinho – 6

The Brazilian was deployed in his preferred position in the centre of midfield tonight but had many horror moments throughout the tie. Dictated play but misplaced multiple passes.

Bernardo Silva – 6.5

The Portuguese midfielder pressed the ball quite aggressively in the second half but wasn’t able to produce his usual magic in the final third. Neat and composed when in possession of the ball.

Riyad Mahrez – 6.5

The trickster had a couple of decent chances to pick out a teammate where he instead chose to go for goal. Looked dangerous as usual with his mazy dribbling and rapid changes of pace.

Gabriel Jesus – 5

The Brazilian was extremely poor in front of goal tonight as he seemed to be off the pace for the entire fixture. Was watched very efficiently by the Southampton back-line, as he posed next to no threat.

Raheem Sterling – 6

The Englishman struggled to make any sort of real impact thanks to some spirited defending from the entire Southampton team. A majority of his attempts were blocked before it got to McCarthy.

Substitutes

Kevin De Bruyne – 6.5

The Belgian magician wasn’t able to produce any of his usual brilliance in the second half tonight as the Saints’ back-line stood firm through the perpetual Manchester City attacking.

Phil Foden – 6

The youngster picked up a couple of decent positions in the box during the latter stages of the tie but didn’t have the impact he might’ve been hoping for. Did link-up play effectively though.
