There have been a lot of speculations surrounding the future of Jadon Sancho, who has most notably been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Fortunately for Borussia Dortmund, though, the ongoing Coronavirus crisis has left Man United slightly crippled in the transfer market.
But at the same time, the Black and Yellows themselves have suffered a net loss of €45 million due to the three-month break from football. And in this article, we will discuss whether or not can Borussia Dortmund afford to sell Jadon Sancho this summer.
What Do BVB Have To Lose?
It is needless to say that Sancho is the most important chance creator for Borussia Dortmund. The Englishman notably averaged 2.2 key passes per game this season. So in that regard, his departure this summer could create a massive void in the creative unit. But it is much more than just that.
What makes Sancho such a key component in Lucien Favre’s attacking unit is his pace and productivity. Unlike most wingers, the youngster can score goals and create chances while providing a lot of threat on the counter. Also, he has the technical prowess required to tune in with Dortmund’s style of play.
Sancho had already established a seemingly telepathic connection with the likes of Erling Haaland, Julian Brandt and Achraf Hakimi at Dortmund. In fact, he has been involved in 34 goals this past season, a tally only bettered by four more players in Europe’s top five leagues.
Can Dortmund find a replacement?
One of their greatest strengths in the Borussia Dortmund setup at the moment is their depth in the attacking unit. The signing of Thorgan Hazard and Brandt last season has greatly improved the overall quality of the team. This is a reason why the Black and Yellows didn’t actually struggle despite having Marco Reus out injured for the second half of the campaign.
Speaking of Reus, he should return to full fitness by the start of the next season. The German international should occupy Sancho’s role, starting alongside either Hazard or Brandt – just in behind the number nine, Haaland. Moreover, Borussia Dortmund have Giovanni Reyna.
The departure of Sancho should pave the way for the American youngster to receive a more prominent role in the first-team next season. Reyna has already shown a lot of promise and should provide Favre with an additional option in the creative department.
Borussia Dortmund certainly have the quality to make up for Sancho’s absence. Still, they will indeed miss the overall productivity, combination play and the pace of the English international that have transformed BVB into one of the most feared attacking units in Europe, under Favre.
Reyna, for example, is fairly inexperienced and will take time settling into the high-paced nature of the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, Reus is nearing the final phase of his career, and his problems have been constant. And following the departure of Achraf Hakimi, Dortmund simply cannot afford to lose Sancho unless Manchester United are willing to table a lucrative offer this summer.
