According to Kicker, as cited by Marca, Bayern Munich are interested in Diego Carlos. The Sevilla centre-back, who reportedly has a release clause of €75 million, is attracting interest from clubs across Europe. Sevilla, too, is facing financial difficulties due to the Coronavirus pandemic and could consider a possible sale.

However, Bayern Munich could face stiff competition from Liverpool, as well as former Premier League champions Manchester City, are also in pursuit of Carlos.

What Can Diego Carlos Offer To The Table?

Since joining Sevilla in a €15 million move from Nantes last summer, Carlos has emerged as a rising star in La Liga this season. He has instantly become an ever-present figure in the backline, mustering up over 3,500 minutes of football and building a solid defensive foundation alongside Jules Kounde.

Standing at 1.86m, Carlos’ imposing presence at the back has given him a considerable advantage when it comes to physical and aerial duels. He has notably been involved in 4.5 aerial duels per game this season, attaining a success rate of 62%.

On a more impressive note, the Brazilian has averaged a whopping five clearances per game. His tally of 170 clearances is more than any other player in La Liga this term. It is an excellent indicator of Carlos’ defensive commitment and no-nonsense attitude, making him one of the most solid centre-backs playing in Spain right now.

Carlos is not the most gifted defender when it comes to playing the ball out from the back, but he still is capable of distributing possession and operating under pressure.

Is Diego Carlos A Viable Option For Bayern Munich?

Bayern Munich are in desperate need of central defenders this summer, especially as the likes of Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng near the final phase of their respective careers. Also, last summer’s marquee signing Lucas Hernandez has failed to impress while Niklas Sule has struggled with injuries.

Although the German international will return to the pitch before the start of next season, he, along with David Alaba, are the only reliable options at centre-back. Carlos, in that regard, should provide an excellent alternative for Hansi Flick.

The Brazilian’s aggression, work-ethic and physical prowess should add a new dimension to the Bayern Munich defence. But at the same time, his lack of quality in terms of passing may cause problems for the Bavarians to properly instigate their systemic build-up.

Indeed, the Sevilla star often relies on short passes and lacks the quality to produce a long-diagonal pass. Given his staggering €75 million release clause, it would perhaps be wiser for Bayern Munich to avoid taking another risk like Hernandez. Instead, they could rely on new signing Tanguy Kouassi while signing a cheaper defensive option from the market.
