According to a recent report by Manchester Evening News, West Ham United are locked in a three-way transfer battle for Manchester United midfielder Dion McGhee who is set to become a free agent at the end of this month. The same source has also revealed that the Hammers will face stiff competition from Rangers and AZ Alkmaar in pursuit of the English playmaker this summer.

McGhee’s Rapid Rise In English Football

The Oldham-born talent has come through the Man United youth system before establishing himself as a first-team starter for Neil Wood’s Under-23 side. He has made nine appearances in the Premier League 2 this term but is yet to score or assist a goal so far.

However, McGhee deserves credit for showing a decent run of form for the Red Devils’ U-18 team, registering five goals and three assists in 33 matches for them across all competitions. Thus, it is quite a surprise that Man United are ready to give up on him before giving a proper shot at the senior level.

The promising teenager has still not made his senior debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team, so maybe a change of scenery this summer could help him earn more first-team minutes at the highest level in the coming seasons.

What Are The English Attacker’s Best Attributes?

McGhee can use his quickness and agility to make a few driving runs with the ball in the opposition half. He has a terrific balance and a low centre of gravity when dribbling with the ball and is not afraid to work hard for the benefit of his team. However, the English starlet needs to improve his productivity in the final third if he wants to be a success story in the Premier League someday.

Is McGhee A Prospect For The Future?

At the moment, McGhee is a raw talent and would need time to adjust to the demands of top-flight football. The Hammers will do well to lure him to the London Stadium as he could prove to be a shrewd, low-risk acquisition for David Moyes in the long-run.

McGhee will improve the overall depth of West Ham’s squad as Moyes could use him in the cup competitions to cope with fixture congestion better in the upcoming campaign. Plus, at 19, the English playmaker could be a prospect to look out for in the future based on his recent performances for Man United’s youth sides. Therefore, it makes sense for the East London outfit to give McGhee a chance before the start of the new season.
