According to a recent report by The Daily Star, Manchester United are set to step up their efforts to land Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish this summer after their pursuit of Jadon Sancho has come to a standstill. The same source has also revealed that the Red Devils have been told to wait at least 12 months for the Borussia Dortmund playmaker, which has led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turning his attention to Grealish ahead of the summer transfer window.
Grealish’s Spectacular Form In The Premier League This Season
Grealish was experiencing one of the most fruitful campaigns of his young career at Villa Park before the football world came to a sudden standstill because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has performed at a high level after putting in a run of impressive displays under the stewardship of Dean Smith during this season.
The 24-year-old has participated in 31 matches for the Villans this term, netting nine goals and grabbing eight assists in multiple competitions which showcases just how productive he has been for his boyhood club over the past ten months.
The Birmingham-born midfield orchestrator has displayed remarkable consistency with his contributions going forward after averaging 2.1 shots, 2.7 key passes and 2.2 dribbles in every 90 minutes of the English top-flight so far. He has hardly given the ball away as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 84.4% in league football this season (stats via whoscored).
Grealish is still waiting to make his senior debut for England but has represented his country at the under-21 level, having registered two goals in seven appearances for them until now. Maybe a summer move to join the Red Devils could provide him with a more prominent platform to catch the attention of Gareth Southgate ahead of the UEFA European Championship finals next year.
What Will The English Workhorse Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
Grealish is also versatile enough to operate in multiple positions across the midfield. He has often been used as an attacking midfielder but can fill in as a wide player on either flank if needed. The England U-21 international can make full use of his quickness and agility to pull off a few driving runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty box. He can play a wide range of passes and has the vision to pick out a decisive through-ball in the final third. The Villa captain has transformed himself into a regular goal-scorer from midfield and has also improved his creativity going forward.
His excellent versatility, coupled with his goal-scoring and assist-making habits, make him a worthy target for Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to consider ahead of the new season. He will not only add more goals and creativity to the Red Devils midfield but also improve the overall depth of their squad.
Furthermore, Grealish could potentially form an unstoppable midfield partnership with the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford in the coming years. Therefore, it makes sense for Solskjaer to orchestrate a move to land the Villans star in the upcoming transfer window so that he has an exceptional squad capable of competing for multiple trophies next season.
