According to a recent report by the Telegraph, Premier League giants Chelsea have agreed on a deal in principle with RB Leipzig over the transfer of highly-rated German attacker Timo Werner this summer. The report suggests that the striker has agreed to join the Blues and that the only thing that remains is tying up the final details of the deal with his current Bundesliga employer. Chelsea’s English rivals Liverpool were also in the race for the speedster’s signature but were reportedly put off by the £53m release clause, which Chelsea were happy to meet at the earliest.

It is claimed that the forward himself has agreed to a switch to Stamford Bridge and that he’s set to earn in the region of £200,000 per week. The news was further backed up by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to clarify the same. The tweet read, “Timo Werner is ready to sign his contract as new Chelsea player until June 2025 on next days – paperworks time. Liverpool have not sent any official bid to hijack the move. Chelsea will pay €55M to RB Leipzig. Timo has already spoken directly with Frank Lampard.”

How Would Timo Werner Fit Into Lampard’s Setup At Chelsea?

One of the most significant points of attraction for the Chelsea scouts about Werner would’ve been the fact that he’s comfortable playing across a variety of positions. Going into what could be a crucial season for the Blues, having a versatile player who can operate as the central striker just as well as he can on the flanks will be a massive asset. The expected departures of Willian and Pedro will open up spaces on the wings where the German could slot in. At the same time, he also has the quality to trump Tammy Abraham and immediately seize the number nine role.

The Leipzig man is an excellent dribbler of the ball, and although comparing him to Eden Hazard wouldn’t be very accurate, he does present Frank Lampard with a similar kind of opportunity. At 22-years-old, the forward has massive scope for potential, and in time he could develop into a similar type of player for Chelsea. Werner tends to time his runs in behind defensive lines to perfection, and that’s mostly why a lot of his goals do seem to be tap-ins. Adept at keeping himself onside while darting through lines, Werner’s finishing abilities will be a boost to Lampard too.

Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham are the Blues’ two main options in the centre-forward role. Chelsea have agreed on a deal to sign Timo Werner, which effectively means that Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi should be written off from the squad by the Chelsea faithful. Abraham and Giroud both offer extremely specific skill-sets – while the Englishman tends to be deadly inside the box, the former Arsenal ace’s physical prowess makes him a good target man. Werner though would bring something entirely new for this Chelsea side. If the German’s attributes have to be compared to that a former Stamford Bridge striker, then the ideal choice would be prime Fernando Torres.

Like the Spaniard, Werner shows the quality and confidence required to pick the ball up in midfield and make things happen on his own, while he also ensures that his presence is felt in the opposition box. Capable of making sharp turns and hitting the target from the unlikeliest of angles, the German’s presence will be a massive blessing to some of the other Chelsea players as well. Not only does Werner score goals at a good pace, but he is also strong at bringing teammates into the game. With the likes of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech expected to lineup alongside him, this Chelsea team could produce great things next season.

Chelsea Have Agreed A Deal To Sign Timo Werner: What Should The Fans Expect Next Season?

One of Chelsea Football Club’s biggest selling points over the years has been their ability to secure trophies in even the most improbable of situations. Their Champions League win in 2012 was arguably amongst the biggest underdog stories ever, while they secured the Europa League title last year despite having a questionable season under Maurizio Sarri.

Frank Lampard has managed to come in and change the mood around this historic football club, but there was a visible lack of a cutting edge in the final third that seemed to be haunting them. The addition of a superstar striker like Werner is exactly what this Chelsea attack has been calling out for, and this deal is sure to pay massive dividends for the London club in the years to come.

Nikhil has been an avid Chelsea fan for as long as the concept of time has existed and rumours say that he even bleeds blue. Having lived in the UK for 3 years, Nikhil is said to have an excellent understanding of the atmosphere surrounding the English game. His role model is the greatest manager of all time - Jose Mourinho.
