Leeds United are on the right track to get promoted to the Premier League, but it cannot be denied that the team will need to add significant reinforcements if they reach the English top flight. The defence is one area where they will need to invest heavily.
Gaetano Berardi is running out of contract, and there are no signs that his stay would be extended at Elland Road. Ben White who has been a mainstay in defence this campaign is only here on loan. Given his performance, the Whites will surely want to sign him.
However, one can expect a lot of competition for his signature with some top clubs already being linked with him. That would leave the Yorkshire club with just once central defender for the upcoming season in Liam Cooper. Hence, it would be imperative for the club to look at new centre backs.
Whelan on Tyrone Mings
Noel Whelan recently indicated the same, and he urged that maybe the Whites could look at someone like Tyrone Mings if Villa goes down to the Championship. Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said, ”The spine of a side is so important. Look at how important Virgil Van Dijk has been and Vincent Kompany over the past few years. Mings is a fantastic player and a great buy. I would have snapped him up after the way he played last season.”
”He is player that is only going to get better, but if Aston Villa goes down, he will be in demand by other Premier League clubs. There may be a clause in his contract, but I would presume Aston Villa will want more than £30million.”
Will Mings be a good signing?
Mings’ stocks have risen in the last calendar year, and he has been the mainstay at the back for Villa. The Englishman also featured for the Three Lions and has won plaudits for his performances. Mings has made 26 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa this campaign and has even gone on to score two goals.
Mings has all bases covered as a defender as he is strong and committed in his challenges. He is decent with the ball at his feet. He might have to improve on some of his decision makings. But in terms of having the raw ingredients, Mings seems to have it all. Now that he has a good experience of the Premier League, one would expect him to get even better.
Signing him would be a significant coup for the Whites. However, one can expect some serious competition for his signature of Villa goes down to the Championship.
