Celtic star Odsonne Edouard has been in top form since the winter break as he leads the scoring charts in the Scottish Premiership. More than the goals, his overall involvement in Celtic’s build-up play is applaudable as Edouard often comes deep to get on the ball.

Former Leeds United ace and son of Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, Alex Bruce recently revealed that he had asked his father to sign Edouard for Newcastle. Bruce had one year with Kilmarnock recently where his contract expired in January last month. Hence, Alex Bruce must have seen Edouard from close quarters.

Alex Bruce recommends Edouard to Newcastle United

Speaking to Football Insider, Bruce said, “I have told dad about Edouard so we’ll see, We’ve seen over the years players have come down south from Scotland, the likes of Henrik Larsson, Di Canio was up there at Celtic, I think the Scottish league can be a little bit disrespected in terms of quality. They have got some good teams, some good players up there. It would be nice to see how Edouard would do.”

It is no surprise that Edouard is attracting interest from the top-flight English clubs. Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City have also been linked (Daily Record) with him. It was under Rodgers that Celtic decided to pay a record fee to sign the French striker from Paris Saint-Germain.

Why will Celtic find it hard to keep him?

There is no doubt that Lennon and Celtic fans would love to see Edouard stay for as long as possible. However, given the financial muscle of the Premier League clubs, there is a sense of inevitability that Edouard would move to bigger and better things in the future.

Not too long ago, Lennon had shared his concerns and said (Daily Record), “We want to keep him for as long as we can, but sometimes business dictates otherwise.”

It’s clear that a good offer can do the trick for the chasing clubs. Edouard was signed for £9m, and he might easily fetch four times that price in the summer. Newcastle United have struggled to score goals up front this season with their big summer signing Joelinton bagging just one goal in the Premier League so far.

Hence, the Magpies could be one of the clubs after Edouard in the future. The striker has his contract at Celtic Park until 2022. Maybe if Lennon can get him to extend for another year or two, then his market value could rise further. The Hoops are unlikely to have the means to keep him for long so Celtic should look to make the most of him until he is sold.
