Rangers’ season at the domestic level went from bad to worse as they once again dropped points in the Premiership and Celtic have now opened up a 12 point lead at the top of the table. Alfredo Morelos has been a significant disappointment since the winter break as he hasn’t been in his element in the past few weeks.
The striker is also set to miss the crucial second leg tie against Braga in the Europa League after he conceded a yellow card in the first leg. The way he got the yellow card must have been frustrating for Gerrard as he was booked for dissent. A player who is aware that he is a yellow card away from suspension should have controlled himself much better.
Allan Hutton upset with Morelos’ discipline
Former Rangers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton don’t seem happy with Morelos’ antics. Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said, “I am sick of talking about it. It is a shame. He brings so much to the team. He is so important. What he gives with his goals and his abilities to run the channels. He has got everything there to be a top striker, but it always seems to let him down; this side of the game.”
“He really needs to try and curb the reactions, throwing the arms up in the air, the gestures. You can cut that out. It is these silly things that are really hurting the team.”
Morelos did well with his disciplinary record in the first half of the season. He was looking much calmer and was avoiding altercations with the referees and the opposition. However, the striker has missed a few games due to suspension in the last two months. The striker has been shown eight yellow cards and two red cards this season in all competitions.
A chance for Kamberi to impress in Europe
Florian Kamberi who impressed against St. Johnstone will be in line to start in place of Morelos against Braga. The Colombian has been out of form, and maybe a game or two away would do him good. However, Morelos would undoubtedly be a big miss in the European competitions. His ability to make runs and hold up play would have come in handy where Rangers might have to defend deep. It remains to be seen how Kamberi would go about his business in Portugal.
Morelos: Hurting his future chances
Morelos needs to find his form back soon. With his recent performances and disciplinary issues, Morelos is also hurting his chances to move to bigger clubs. Interested clubs might not be keen on spending big money for the Rangers man until and unless he shows more maturity on the pitch. That would also worry Gerrard if he decides to cash in on Morelos. It is understandable why Hutton and Rangers faithful might be frustrated with the Colombian as he seems to have all the natural talent in the world. However, he needs to bring more composure to his game.
