According to a recent report by The Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur will not be acquiring the services of Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani this month as the Uruguayan striker favours a move to Atletico Madrid.

The same source has also mentioned that the PSG forward’s contract at the French capital expires at the end of this campaign with the player publicly stating that he wants to leave the French club.

Cavani’s Growing Frustrations At The French Capital This Season

Cavani has endured a frustrating season at Parc des Princes after struggling to earn regular first-team opportunities under Thomas Tuchel’s stewardship. The PSG boss has often preferred to use Mauro Icardi ahead of the veteran striker which is why he has only managed to feature in 14 matches for the Ligue 1 giants this term, scoring five goals and providing one assist across all competitions.

The Uruguay international has averaged 1.3 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.2 dribbles per game in the French first division (stats via whoscored). The 32-year-old is currently out of action with a groin strain. He is vastly experienced at the international level, having featured in 116 international matches for Uruguay while scoring 50 goals for his nation in the process.

What Are The South American Star’s Best Attributes?

Cavani has lost a yard of pace from his game over the past couple of years, but he can still be quite effective when dribbling with the ball in the opposition half. He comes alive in a 1v1 situation and is a lethal presence in the final third. The Uruguayan sensation packs a lot of power with his shots and can be an unforgiving finisher in front of goal. He also scores his fair share of goals with his head as well.

Missing Out On Cavani: Big Blow For Spurs?

However, Cavani can be a liability defensively as he struggles to work hard for his side when not in possession of the ball. Hence, he would have only been a short-term fix for Spurs if they managed to bring him to North London this winter. Even though it will be a massive blow for Tottenham to miss out on Cavani, Mourinho could see the situation as a blessing in disguise as he will be able to focus on recruiting a more long-term option next summer.

However, the more immediate challenge for the Portuguese tactician would be to find a way to cope with Harry Kane’s injury absence in the coming months.
