According to a recent report by Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen is said to be attracting a lot of interest from many of Europe’s biggest clubs. The report suggests that the likes of Juventus, Real Madrid, PSG and even the Milan pair, are all keeping a keen eye on the Danish international midfielder’s situation at Tottenham, especially considering that his current contract expires at the end of the season.
While Jose Mourinho’s arrival was thought to be good news from the player’s perspective, the manager himself has gone on to hint that a contract agreement is far away. The report claims that the Danish star could depart in January, especially if Spurs don’t want to let him walk away for free next summer. It has been suggested that Manchester United have been long-term suitors of the midfielder’s services and that they could be tempted to propose a player swap deal that would also involve Nemanja Matic going the other way.
What Is Manchester United’s Current Midfield Situation?
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have struggled to maintain any kind of form in recent weeks but were good enough to hand Jose Mourinho his first defeat as Tottenham manager just this week. The return of Scott McTominay undoubtedly came as a massive boost to the manager’s long-term aspirations. However, the fact that players like Paul Pogba are still unavailable could come back to haunt them later on in the campaign.
Manchester United used the summer window to apparently clear out the players that were considered to be dead-weight – Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini. As bad as these players were during their stint at United, the club is currently in urgent need for quality midfielders, and the addition of a Premier League star like Eriksen would carry this team a long way.
What Would Christian Eriksen Add To This United Team?
The midfielder is an excellent passer of the ball in the middle of the park and is more than capable of distributing it around effectively as well. He boasts an excellent delivery from crosses or with dead-ball situations and generally picks out his target in the box with ease. The Danish international has been a Spurs player for a while now, and the types of goals he’s scored along the way should be enough to convince the United staff.
The Red Devils have struggled to find a potent attack-minded midfielder in their ranks, with the likes of Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard flopping consistently. Eriksen will undoubtedly be an upgrade on any of the United midfielders that are currently in contention for selection. The Dane has been a part of the English footballing scene since joining from Ajax in 2013, and he’s since picked up an excellent return of 68 goals and 88 assists from just under 300 fixtures for Spurs.
Why Manchester United Need To Beat Their Rivals To Eriksen Signing
Ole’s men have been stuttering in the Premier League, despite boasting a fairly complete squad. United will surely have massive aspirations going into the latter stages of the campaign, especially because last year was a trophy-less one. Manchester United fans are used to seeing their club challenge for every competition they’re involved in, and their easiest way back into the elite level of club football could be by simply signing Christian Eriksen in Nemanja Matic’s stead.
