According to Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the services of Memphis Depay. The Olympique Lyonnais forward has made quite an impression at his current club and has now been linked with a return to the Premier League. However, Spurs could face stiff competition from league rivals Liverpool in the pursuit of Depay, whose contract expires at the end of next season.
Depay’s success and what he can bring to the table
Depay was formerly a member of the Manchester United team when he joined the club back in 2015. But, the Dutch international endured a horrible spell at Old Trafford, scoring only seven goals in 50 competitive matches. He moved to Lyon in January 2017 due to his struggles in the Premier League.
Almost three years later, Depay is now one of the sought-after attackers in Europe. He has been involved in as many as 92 goals in just 130 competitive matches for Olympique Lyon. His performances in front of goal have helped the club prosper despite quality players leaving every single summer.
But it seems like Depay is going to be the next one to leave. His electric pace, coupled with his technical prowess and dynamism, could be effective in the Premier League. Besides, the 25-year-old’s gameplay has matured a lot, and he is now more reliable when it comes to finding the back of the net.
Moreover, Depay, at the age of 25, has time on his side and should be a smart-long investment for any top club in Europe.
Do Tottenham really need Depay?
Following a horrendous start to the season, one would expect Tottenham Hotspur to undergo a potential squad overhaul in the upcoming January transfer window. However, it’s the defence and midfield, where the Lilywhites have mainly struggled this season.
It’s needless to say that Mauricio Pochettino could really use the addition of an extra winger, who can provide cover for Son Heung-Min, Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura. But, the main reason why Spurs must drop their pursuit of Depay right now is that they have other problems they need to address first.
For example, the Premier League side lack the presence of a quality fullback on both ends of the pitch. The likes of Serge Aurier, Ben Davies, have disappointed big time, and Pochettino must sign someone who can prove to be an upgrade over these two individuals.
Furthermore, Spurs need to sign a central defender, with Jan Vertonghen nearing the final phase of his career. Davinson Sanchez has only looked like a shadow of his former self while Toby Aldweireld has been linked with a move elsewhere. Hence, they should turn their attention to signing a new CB instead of splashing the cash on Depay.
