According to a recent report by The Mirror, Premier League giants Chelsea are said to be in the market for more midfield reinforcements as Frank Lampard looks to strengthen his squad even further if their two season transfer ban is cut short. It has been suggested that Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is atop the Blues’ transfer wish-list and that Frank Lampard is expected to go all out for the youngster if their transfer ban is lifted.
Although the Blues’ transfer ban is still in play, they have been granted an appeal hearing by the court of arbitration for sport on the 20th of November. It has been suggested in the report that Chelsea are confident about their upcoming court date, and they believe the transfer ban will be lifted. Having not been allowed to make any transfers in the summer whatsoever, Frank Lampard will be eager to dip into the club’s deep pockets to acquire some talented players.
How Has Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Risen To Supremacy?
Despite being born in a quaint Spanish town, the Serbian always had a place in his heart for his home country. Although his youth playing career began elsewhere, it was at Serbian club Vojvodina that he made a name for himself. Having spent a little under seven years at the club, it was inevitable that he would finally break into the first-team setup, and when he did, he looked like a step up in quality compared to the rest of the squad.
It was in 2014 that KRC Genk – the team responsible for developing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois, identified they Serbian star as a potential talent and secured his signature. His time at Genk was so successful that he was only afforded a year there before Serie A outfit Lazio came calling. After making the switch to Italy, the Serbian has only gone from strength to strength, having scored 34 goals from a 179 matches for Le Aquile. He developed into a vital cog in Simone Inzhagi’s system at the club, often controlling proceedings with his tactical prowess.
What Would Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Add To This Chelsea Team?
Having played out his recent years in a highly tactical league like the Serie A, there’s no need to question the Serbian’s ability to understand situations and make the right decisions. An excellent passer of the ball, the 24-year-old has a sensational delivery from wide areas under his belt, while he’s more than capable of long cross-field switches look extremely easy as well.
Despite playing in midfield, he tends to make lasting impacts on football teams with his direct and powerful approach towards the game. Standing at over 1.9m tall, the Serbian can be quite a presence in the middle of the park, and has the strength and physicality to bully the ball off the opposition. He can put in some sharp tackles to break up the play and also has the odd goal in his arsenal.
Does This Move Make Sense For Chelsea?
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side looks completely spoilt for choice at this moment in time, with multiple midfield stars currently out with injuries. Although Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have been the first choice so far this season, once Ross Barkley, N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek return, Lampard will have a massive selection conundrum on his hands. With a stacked team already at his disposal, Frank Lampard will do well to think twice before sanctioning this deal.
