According to a recent report by Marca, Barcelona are set to offer their German keeper Marc-André ter Stegen a new contract. It is understood that the Catalans want to tie their goalie up on a fresh long-term deal which could see him get a pay rise at the Nou Camp (via Marca).
Ter Stegen’s Remarkable Rise To The Top Of European Football
The La Liga shot-stopper is a product of Borussia Monchengladbach academy. Since making a switch to Spain in the summer of 2014, ter Stegen has enjoyed a successful spell at Barca, winning the UEFA Champions League once and the La Liga title four times along the way.
The 27-year-old has made a solid start to this season after putting in a few heroic displays for Ernesto Valverde’s side thus far. Ter Stegen has shipped in 11 goals and kept three clean sheets in ten appearances for the Spanish champions this season.
His incredible shot-stopping has helped Barca climb to the second spot of the La Liga standings. The Monchengladbach-born prospect has also earned 22 international caps for the German national side so far.
What Does The German Keeper Offer On The Field?
Ter Stegen is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in world football. He reads the game well and is usually excellent with his positioning in front of the goal. The German goalie has fast reflexes which help him to pull off some world-class saves at the back. Furthermore, the Barca custodian has a safe pair of hands and can distribute the ball accurately inside his own half.
Offering Ter Stegen A New Contract: Clever Move By The Catalans?
Retaining ter Stegen’s services on a new and improved contract will undeniably be the right move by the Catalan outfit as the German keeper has still got his best years ahead of him. The former Bundesliga sensation has proven time and again that he is not afraid to perform under the spotlight at the highest level.
In an era where top quality goalkeepers are hard to come by, Barca need to make sure that they do not end up losing a shot-stopper of ter Stegen’s calibre as he will be irreplaceable in the long-run.
