‘2 Or 3 Who Need To Go’ Gerrard Reveals His January Window Plans: Good Decision For Rangers?

Rangers have recruited heavily since Steven Gerrard took over at the club as they made wholesale changes to the side. That has helped the Bears close the gap down on Celtic, and we could be in for a very tight title race this season. Currently, Celtic lead the table only on goal difference.

Gerrard in his January plans

Steven Gerrard recently indicated what his plans would be in the January transfer market. The gaffer clearly stated that their main aim would be to ship away some players. Gerrard said (Daily Record), ”I’m not sure players will be out there in January to improve on what we’ve got. Obviously, if something pops up where we think it’ll strengthen us, Ross and I will look at it.”

“But the next window will be more to downsize in terms of numbers. Because there are two or three, who need to go and play. I’m finding it hard to get them into the 18.”

Reports from the Daily Record says that the likes of Matt Polster and Greg Docherty could be sent away on loan in January. Rangers will also look to ship away Albanian winger Eros Grezda who has remained on the outskirts of the squad this season.

Right call from the gaffer?

January transfer market is not the best time to get top players as most clubs are reluctant to lose crucial players midway through the season. Rangers have plenty of options in almost all the departments, and it is unlikely that the Gers would look to add much in the winter. However, they can still probably consider getting in one more striker.

As for sending Greg Docherty and Matt Polster on loan, it was always going to be on the cards. Docherty though would be disappointed to find himself on the fringes of the squad after his impressive loan outing with Shrewsbury last season. However, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis have looked good, and the arrival of Andy King has pushed him further away from first-team chances.

Polster is a significant drop down in quality from Tavernier, and as a result, the gaffer hasn’t been able to trust him even in the ‘lesser fixtures’. The American needs some minutes under his belt to realise his true potential, and it would be the right move from the gaffer to send him away on loan. Eros Grezda has been the biggest flop under Gerrard. Even in the summer, the club failed to ship him away. Let’s see whether they can find a suitor for the winger in January.
