According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is a transfer target for MLS club DC United. The goalkeeper is currently the second choice option at the Ibrox ever since the arrival of Allan McGregor on a free transfer.

Foderingham had joined Rangers from Swindon Town in 2015 and became their first choice custodian soon. He hasn’t done much wrong, but McGregor’s experience and impressive displays has kept Foderingham as the second choice option at the Glaswegian club.

The Englishman’s contract is set to expire next summer, and foreign clubs can sign him on a pre-contract deal in January. Foderingham has been a dependable goalkeeper, and he is even a younger option than McGregor. However, Gerrard has hinted not too long ago that McGregor could be handed a new deal (The Scottish Sun) after the way he has gone about his business in his second spell with the Gers.

To be fair, Foderingham can easily play first-team football, and a transfer move was always going to be on the cards for him.

What should Rangers do?

Ideally, Gerrard would want two goalkeepers challenging each other for the first-team spot. However, keeping both of them satisfied is never going to be an easy task for the Liverpool legend. Hence, the Gers boss might have to consider parting ways with Foderingham at the end of this campaign. Allan McGregor will be 38 by the time next season starts and to keep him, Gerrard might lose a talented and a younger option like Foderingham.

We think that Gerrard should be bold here and get Foderingham a new deal if possible. As for McGregor, he can be given a year-long extension. Rangers should try to offer Foderingham a chance to become the first choice after one more season. However, it could be tough to keep him satisfied if he stays on as a backup for another year.

It won’t be a surprise to see Foderingham leave before the start of the next campaign and one wouldn’t blame Gerrard for that as McGregor is still going strong in between the sticks. If that happens then, Rangers can look to promote Robby McCrorie, who is a Scotland u-21 international, as their second choice keeper.

What could Gerrard have done in the summer?

Maybe the Gers should have sold Foderingham earlier this summer so that they could have gotten a transfer fee for him. We don’t think that any potential suitors of the player would want to recruit him in January knowing well that in a few months he would become a free agent.
