According to Calciomercato, AC Milan’s negotiation with Atletico Madrid regarding the transfer of Angel Correa have stalled. Instead, the Italian giants are ready to swoop in for LOSC Lille starlet Rafael Leao. And this could serve as a significant boost for Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Correa, who has emerged as the latest transfer target for the Lilywhites. However, they could face stiff competition from Valencia.

Correa’s spell at Atletico Madrid

Formerly a prodigy of San Lorenzo, Correa initially joined Atletico Madrid for a fee of €7.5 million in January 2015. He struggled to make a mark in the first-team during his first two seasons in the Spanish top flight, featuring in a combined total of just over 2,000 minutes.

However, the Argentine enjoyed a more prominent role during the 2017/18 campaign, mostly thanks to the departure of Yannick Ferreira Carrasco. He made 37 appearances during the corresponding season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists.

But, last season, the 24-year-old lacked productivity, having been involved in only five league goals in 37 matches. And with Atleti signing Joao Felix this summer, a move away from the club could make sense as he seeks to revive his career in the upcoming season.

What can Correa bring to the table?

Correa is a dynamic attacker who can conjure scoring opportunities for his team. The Argentine loves to take on defenders and has exquisite control over the ball. He had, in fact, averaged almost two dribbles and 1.1 key passes per game last season.

Besides, as one would expect from any player groomed by Diego Simeone, Correa is a fearless attacker. He isn’t afraid to commit himself into tackles and always looks to put pressure on opposing defenders. He notably attempted 2.3 tackles per game last season.

Is Correa the right option for Spurs?

Correa would be an excellent signing for Tottenham Hotspur given their lack of natural wingers. The current wide duo of Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min have been utilised in a more central role by Mauricio Pochettino, of late. As for Erik Lamela, he has mostly struggled with injuries.

Hence, the Atleti star can easily be slotted into the wide attacking positions alongside either of Son or Lucas. Alternatively, the Argentine can also feature as a number ten, making him an indirect replacement for Christian Eriksen, should he leave the club this summer. However, it remains doubtful whether or not he will be able to thrive in the fast-paced nature of the Premier League.
