Recently reports had emerged that Rangers will target Leeds United’s striker Kemar Roofe if they go on to lose Alfredo Morelos in this window. Many might have felt that United will be able to fight off interest from Scotland to keep hold of their last season’s top scorer. However, more worrying news is coming the Whites way as Sky Sports reports that Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion are showing an interest in the English forward.

The 26-year-old striker has already entered the final year of his contract, and there is still no extension in sight even though there have been some talks regarding Roofe signing a new contract. Reliable and reputed journalist Phil Hay gave an update in May that the Yorkshire outfit will find it difficult to get Roofe on a new deal. Therefore, the prospective buyers might be in with a good shout to sign the striker.

Leeds United have managed to find themselves in a bit of muck, and they would be playing with fire if they don’t manage to agree on a new contract with Roofe soon.

Why is Roofe important to Bielsa?

The striker was the highest goal scorer for the White last season. Patrick Bamford was signed for big money, but the Englishman was below par in his performances. Tyler Roberts is still an upcoming player who cannot be relied upon to score regularly throughout the season. The only player in the squad who looks like getting 20-25 goals next season is Roofe and losing out on him will be a big blow for the club.

Roofe is more than just a striker as he presses the opposition from the top and the striker is often given a free role in the attacking third. His movement, pace and work rate are his standout attributes, and he slotted in well in the Bielsa system. The Whites suffered in the second half of the season when Roofe was out with injury. After the injury, the Englishman failed to hit the ground running, and the Whites faltered in the final lap of the campaign.

Can Bielsa keep him?

With Premier League clubs interested, we think that the striker’s head would turn. Leeds United should have never even let their striker enter the final year of his contract. Reports earlier mentioned that Roofe wants pay parity with fellow striker Bamford who was signed last season.

There is no doubt to us who is more critical for the Whites right now, and the club should respect his demands. However, with Premier League clubs now showing interest, even that might be a bit too late now.
