In a recent interview with reporters in the United States (via AS), Bayer Munich left-back David Alaba shared his thoughts on the recent speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona and said,
“Of course, it’s an acknowledgement, it’s an honour for me.
“My focus is fully on Bayern here in America and on pre-season. I want to concentrate on the essentials.”
Alaba’s Incredible Career In German Football
The Wien-born talent grew up playing football in Austria before making a high-profile switch to Munich in the summer of 2008. Alaba has been one of the most successful left-backs in the German top-flight. He has already won the Bundesliga title six times and the UEFA Champions League trophy once during his time with the German outfit.
The Austrian defensive ace had another productive season at the Allianz Arena in the last campaign after he put in some commanding displays for the Bavarian giants while operating as a left-back. Alaba featured in 43 matches for Bayern last season, scoring three goals while grabbing seven assists across all competitions. On the defensive end, the former Aspern youth player made an average of 1.1 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.0 clearances per game in the Bundesliga (stats via whoscored).
The 27-year-old is also vastly experienced at the international level after representing Austria in 69 matches while registering 13 goals for them so far.
What Does The Austrian Talent Offer On The Pitch?
Alaba is very quick and agile down the left flank which enables him to make some lung-bursting dribbles in the opposition half. He hardly gives away the ball and can contribute by scoring or creating a few goals going forward. The Austria international doesn’t shy away from his defensive responsibilities and can make some crucial interceptions for his team.
Should The Catalans Move In For Alaba This Summer?
The acquisition of an accomplished left-back like Alaba will undoubtedly bolster Ernesto Valverde’s defensive options ahead of the new season. The Bayern Munich defender could turn out to be an ideal long-term replacement for Jordi Alba at the Nou Camp. Now that Alaba has disclosed his respect for Barca, it makes sense for Valverde to orchestrate a move to bring Alaba to Catalunya before the start of the new campaign. Yes, we know it’s easier said than done.
