Liverpool are apparently at crossroads in the pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt. The player’s agent Mino Raiola believes that Anfield could be the ideal destination for the youngster. But, his lucrative wage demands could brew tension inside the Liverpool dressing room

Therefore, it would perhaps be wiser for the Reds to drop their interest in the Ajax sensation. And as an alternative, Jurgen Klopp could make a move for Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng this summer.

It is believed that the German international is set to leave Bavaria after falling down the pecking order under Niko Kovac. Bayern Munich have already strengthened their defence with the addition of Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez, and that could leave Boateng out of Kovac’s plans next season. This might open the door for Liverpool to make a move.

What can Boateng bring to the table?

Boateng is a highly experienced defender, who has made nearly 300 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions. He has also enjoyed a decorated career, having won the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League whilst being crowned the German champions seven times.

As far as gameplay is concerned, Boateng is someone who likes to impose his presence in the defensive half. His tall 1.92m frame makes him an intimidating figure for the attackers. It also hands him a considerable advantage in the air.

But, Boateng’s biggest asset is his ability to find midfielders and attackers using his laser focussed passes. Also, the German international is adept in delivering accurate long diagonal balls to either switch the play or launch counter-attacks.

He is quite good at reading the game as well while the 30-year-old is proficient when it comes to making goal-saving tackles.

Why should Liverpool sign Boateng

Boateng will bring the winning mentality to the Liverpool side who will be keen to pip Manchester City and other top clubs for the Premier League title next season. His experience at the highest level of football could also help him marshall a relatively young Liverpool side.

Also, the German international is an aggressive tackler who loves to win back possession. And that tunes in well with Klopp’s Gegenpressing philosophy at Liverpool. Furthermore, the fact that Boateng can launch counter-attacks with his accurate long balls will make the Reds much more dangerous on the break.

Therefore, Boateng seems like a good fit for Liverpool not just from a sporting perspective but also from a tactical point of view – making him a viable target for the European champions.
