Portsmouth’s Jamal Lowe is one of the most sought after players from the English third tier after his impressive campaign with the Pompey. The English winger contributed with 17 goals and nine assists in over 50 games for his side last season. Recently reports from The Daily Mirror (June 15, page 73), had come out that Portsmouth had rejected a £2.5m bid from Millwall for the winger with Burnley also interested in signing him.
Reports from Sky Sports in May came out that Leeds United were one of the teams interested in signing him, but those links seem to have taken a back seat now. We really think that the Whites should step up their pursuit for Lowe in the summer after his impressive season.
Millwall have had two bids rejected now, and it remains to be seen how much Portsmouth would demand for their prized asset. Lowe will enter in the final year of his contract, but Kenny Jackett has the option of triggering a one-year extension. Nevertheless, the Whites should test the League One outfit’s resolve to keep hold of the winger.
Why does Leeds United need to add wingers?
Reportedly, the Whites are in the market to sign three wingers in the summer. Last season, Ezgjan Alioski and Jack Harrison played from the left flank, but both of them were below par. Pablo Hernandez was deployed from the right side, but he was at his best when he came inside and got a chance to affect play from central areas.
As he is almost 34 now, he doesn’t have the pace to run the defenders ragged down the flank, and he would be better suited to play as an attacking midfielder. Therefore the club desperately needs to add options on both sides.
What can Lowe bring at Elland Road?
The 24-year-old is typically a right winger, and he likes to take on defenders. The Englishman is blessed with decent pace and dribbling skills. He has that flair to his game, which makes him a joy to watch when on a song. Lowe also showed last season that he could help his team out defensively as he often tracked back to keep things tight.
Can Bielsa sign him?
We think that the winger can come inside Leeds United’s price range in the summer. With Premier League club like Burnley also interested, it shows how highly some rate him. Leeds United are fighting to get into the Premier League, and we feel that the Portsmouth winger should prefer a move to Elland Road over Millwall. The Whites can offer him regular game time as well so the Whites can even get the better of Burnley in the race.
