According to the latest reports from the Irish Sun, Leeds United are set to compete with Norwich City for the signature of Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers. The 20-year-old appeared for the Cherries in their final two games of the last season and did a decent job in goal for his side. The White are interested in getting him on a loan deal.
Why Leeds United need a goalkeeper?
Norwich are said to be on the lookout for a backup to Tim Krul. Leed United too need a goalkeeper as Kiko Casilla failed to impress at Elland Road after he was brought in with a lot of optimism from Real Madrid. Reports have started to emerge that the Spanish custodian is thinking about leaving the club so the Whites will have to again dive in the transfer market to get in a new goalkeeper.
Bailey Peacock Farrell who started the last season as the first choice goalkeeper has also hinted that he might move in search for regular game time. The goalkeeping spot has troubled Leeds United a lot in the past few years, and that is one position they should look to sort out to mount a better and improved challenge for the Premier League promotion.
Travers is a young and upcoming goalkeeper and Bournemouth rate him highly. He still has two years left in his contract, but the Premier League outfit are looking to get him on an improved deal. Travers is reportedly eager to find out what his role would be in the next season as the Cherries have also offered Artur Boruc a new contract. Therefore he might look to move away in search of first-team opportunities.
Will Travers be a good bet for the Whites?
The 20-year-old is still inexperienced and hasn’t played at the top level much. He has represented Ireland at various youth levels, but there is still a long way to go before he can establish himself. Given Bielsa’s playing style, Leeds United would want to have a goalkeeper who can be calm under possession and looks to pass out from the back.
We think it’s time for the Whites to stop beating around the bush with the goalkeeper spot and sign an experienced custodian who is proven at the Championship/Premier League level. Not to be too harsh on Travers, but he can turn out to be another Peacock Farrell, a player with potential who would take time to show his true colours.
For a team fighting for the Premier League spot, the Whites should go out and bring in a proven quantity instead of another ”potential talent”.
