According to the latest reports from the Express, Celtic have held initial talks with Derby County’s left back Max Lowe. The fullback got a full season experience of playing in the Scottish Premiership as he had two six months loan spells at Aberdeen last campaign. Celtic’s arch-rivals Rangers also seem to be interested. The report mentions that the Hoops are looking at Lowe as a replacement for Kieran Tierney.
Celtic’s star full back Tierney is attracting plenty of interest in the transfer market from Arsenal. Therefore it is not a bad idea from Neil Lennon to keep a target in mind as a replacement for the fullback. The reports though mentions that Lowe future is unlikely to be decided until Derby County’s managerial situation is sorted for the next season.
Lowe impressed playing as a left back for the Dons in his 28 Premiership appearances he made last season. The fullback managed to provide two goals along with two assists as well.
Lennon has reportedly enquired about whether Lowe would be available on loan or a permanent transfer this summer. Aberdeen are also said to be keen on getting him back at the Pittodrie, so we are likely to have a three-way fight between the Scottish giants for the signature of Lowe with Rangers also in the mix.
What will Lowe bring to Parkhead?
The English fullback is known to be tenacious in his approach, and he has that physical side to his game, which allows him to go head-on with his opposition. Lowe’s standout attribute is his pace and defensive work rate. On the attacking side of his game, the defender might still have to improve to be termed as a top class option. Nevertheless, he isn’t too shoddy with the ball at his feet as he can contribute with assists and goals down the left-hand side.
A good bet for Celtic?
If Lowe is being looked like a backup to someone like Tierney, then the fans would definitely be underwhelmed. If the Hoops reach a point where they end up selling Tierney, then they are likely to make some good money out of him.
With that kind of money, they can look at far better and established options than Lowe in the transfer market. However, with Emilio Izaguirre’s contract expiring, the Hoops can have him as a backup option. With Tierney’s injury issues, Lowe would be a decent signing as a number two in the left back role.
