Recently Rangers were linked with a move for Rennes’ defender Edson Mexer. The 30-year-old is an established name in Ligue 1, but the Gers were unable to lure him to the Ibrox as Bordeaux secured his future on a free transfer. Now Gerrard will need to look at other options in the summer to solve his defensive dilemmas.
Who can Rangers go for?
One player that Gerrard can go after is his former international team-mate Gary Cahill who is set to leave Chelsea on a free transfer. Rangers require an experienced defender who can lead the side at the back and Cahill can be a top option to have even at the age of 33.
The defender was regular for Chelsea up until last season when Antonio Conte was their manager. However, Maurizio Sarri went on to revive David Luiz’s career at Stamford Bridge when he came back. Cahill has been linked with a move for Fulham in the summer, and the Cottagers are going down to the Championship.
Gerrard can offer Cahill a final chance to compete in Europe, and he can be a regular starter for Rangers. Someone like Cahill will also have an effect off the pitch on the current crop of players which the Bears have at their disposal.
Why Rangers need a defender?
The Gers are set to lose the likes of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley in the next few weeks as their contract with the club is coming to an end. Joe Worrall is unlikely to come again on another loan spell as the Nottingham Forest manager has indicated that he would use the English defender in the next season.
That will leave the club with only two centre back options in the form of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic. Rangers have looked decent at the back, but they have made some blunders as well. An experienced defender is the need of the hour, and they should look to bring in this experienced Champions League winner at Ibrox.
Qualities of Cahill
Cahill is strong in the air and is comfortable with the ball at his feet as well. The 33-year-old might not be blessed with too much pace, but he reads the dangers well and can smother them out before they can develop. The defender is also known for his commitment and desire as he is not afraid to throw his body on the line to help his side at the back.
All these qualities should make him a decent bet for Rangers. Affording his wages can be an issue for the club, but the fact that he would come on a free transfer means that the Light Blues can use the money they would have used on his transfer to pay him his wages.
