Barcelona Inching Closer Towards Sealing Move For This Ajax Ace: Decent Option For Barca?

According to a recent report by, Barcelona are zoning in on AFC Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt ahead of a potential move during the summer transfer period. The same source has revealed that the Catalan giants are leading the chase to secure the services of the Dutch defensive ace, but nothing has been finalised thus far.

De Ligt’s Remarkable Rise To The Top Of Dutch Football

The Dutch youngster has enjoyed an impressive season in the Eredivisie as his incredible defensive contributions have helped Ajax reach the top of the league standings. They are now in pole position to secure the league title with a game against De Graafschap looming on the horizon.

His stellar form in the UEFA Champions League has also caught the eye as he led Ajax to the semifinals of the competition where they were eventually knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur on the away goals rule earlier this month.

The 19-year-old has featured in 54 matches for the four-time European champions this season, registering seven goals while providing four assists across all competitions. More importantly, de Ligt has made an average of 1.1 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 4.0 clearances per game for Ajax during this campaign (Stats taken from Whoscored).

What Will The Dutch International Bring To The Nou Camp?

The Eredivisie wonderkid is destined for greatness and could turn out to be a world-class prospect in the coming years. De Ligt has led the Ajax defence with authority and conviction during this season. He has developed a knack for making crucial interceptions when his team needs him the most. Furthermore, he is a potent threat from set-pieces which has enhanced his stock even more in the transfer market.

Will De Ligt Be A Good Option For Valverde’s Side?

Barcelona would be fortunate to acquire a player of de Ligt’s incredible potential in this offseason. At 19, the Dutch defender can be a first-team starter at the Nou Camp for years to come. Hence, Barca should try everything they can to bring him to the La Liga ahead of the new season.

As long as the Ajax centre-back is prepared to learn and improve his game, there is a decent chance that he will succeed under Ernesto Valverde’s stewardship at Catalunya.
