According to the official Rangers website, Southampton midfielder Steven Davis has signed a one year contract with Rangers. The midfielder had joined Rangers for his second spell in January on loan, and that spell was about to expire at the end of the season. But now it is clear that the midfielder will stay at the club until the summer of 2020.

The veteran midfielder’s contract was expiring with Southampton, and once Davis had settled in at Ibrox, it was always expected that Rangers would secure his future. The Gers have gone on an impressive run after the Old Firm derby defeat as they have won four back to back games now.

One player who has played a crucial role in that is Steven Davis. The midfielder was only used as a bits and pieces player in the initial few months. Davis often struggled as it seemed like the pace of the game was too much for him to handle. Some fans might have thought that the gamble of bringing their former son isn’t going to pay off.

However, once Davis got some game time under his belt, he transformed himself and the side for the good. His movement and clever touches in the final third has been impressive. Moreover, he has brought that much-needed calmness in possession which Rangers seemed to lack on occasions.

The Northern Irish international hadn’t played much football for Southampton in the past year, so we didn’t expect the Saints to provide any competition for his signature.

What will he add to the team?

Rangers and Gerrard will have a huge second season, and an experienced man like Davis can be a real difference maker in the squad. His age and intensity of the league might not allow him to play every game, but someone like Davis can contribute even off the pitch. The experienced midfielder knows a thing or two about winning trophies as well as he managed to win three Premiership titles in his first spell at Ibrox.

Right call by Gerrard to sign him?

His versatility to play in different roles in midfield would come in handy for the club, and his late runs into the box could see him score quite a few goals. Rangers have relied heavily on Alfredo Morelos to score their goals, and they need bit more contribution from midfield. Davis has the capability to come up with 10 goals next season, and we think that Rangers and Gerrard have made the right call by handing him a year-long contract after his recent performances.
