In a recent column with BBC Sport, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has urged the Reds to consider securing the services of Olympique Lyonnais playmaker Nabil Fekir at the end of this campaign after his failed transfer to Anfield last summer. When asked about which player Jurgen Klopp should consider recruiting by BBC Sport, Lawrenson said, “I am talking about bringing in someone with a bit more creativity, like Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, who they were going to buy last summer until the move fell through.
“The way the season has gone, you could not say they have missed him, but in future, they will have to look at having more ways to win games, especially against teams who just sit in.”
Klopp would be wise to listen to Lawrenson’s advice and consider focusing on more creative players during this summer transfer period so that the Reds can turn those seven draws from this past Premier League campaign into wins next season.
Fekir’s Consistency In The Ligue 1
Fekir has enjoyed another fabulous campaign in the Ligue 1 this term after he put in a series of match-winning displays during this campaign. The 25-year-old has made 39 appearances for Lyon this season, finding the back of the net 12 times while creating seven assists in all competitions.
The Ligue 1 talent has also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France as he helped his nation go all the way in Russia last year where they eventually ended up beating Croatia with a 4-2 scoreline in the final. He has featured in 21 international matches for France and has scored two goals for them thus far.
What Does The French International Offer On The Pitch?
Fekir can be considered as one of the brightest playmakers in French football and could be a good fit at the Merseyside club if Klopp decided to go back in for him. He is a lethal dribbler with the ball at his feet and can score goals consistently at the highest level. Furthermore, the French winger can open up the meanest of defences as he has an eye for a killer pass in the final third.
The potential addition of a player of Fekir’s proven track record will undoubtedly bolster Klopp’s attacking options at Anfield next season. Liverpool can benefit from recruiting a quality playmaker in the transfer market as they have sometimes lacked invention from their central midfielders, so Fekir fits the bill perfectly.
Will Going Back For Fekir Be The Correct Move For The Merseyside Club?
However, the Merseyside outfit should only opt for the player if they are convinced about Fekir. The French international has had his fair share of injury concerns during his playing career so the jury is still out on how he would be able to cope with the physical toll of English football. All in all, it could be an excellent move for the Reds if they were successful in luring the Lyon-born talent to Merseyside in this offseason.
