According to AS, Everton and Watford are both eyeing a move for Girona defender Juanpe. The Toffees are keen to add more options to their defensive department next season, and Juanpe has been identified as a top target. It is believed that the Merseyside giants are willing to table a £6 million bid for the Spanish defender, who could be available on a reduced price after being relegated to the Segunda division this season.

What can Juanpe offer to the Everton backline?

Since his move to Girona in 2016, Juanpe has become a mainstay in the Gironistes defence. He was pivotal in their promotion to the top flight in his debut campaign. And the 28-year-old has already made over 100 competitive appearances during his three-year spell with the club.

As far as gameplay is concerned, Juanpe is primarily known for his aerial prowess. The Spaniard has won a whopping 3.3 headed duels per game this season. And this is mainly due to his tall 1.89m frame, which, aside from being an advantage in aerial duels, also makes him an intimidating figure for the attackers.

Juanpe is also known for his aggression, having averaged 1.5 tackles per game. He can read the game quite well too and has completed more interceptions than any other player in the team.

Also, the ex-Valladolid defender has an excellent mentality and concentration. He can stick to his marker and remain disciplined throughout the game – making him an asset to any team in the world.

Should Everton make a move for Juanpe?

The addition of someone like Juanpe could revamp Everton’s defensive department, especially with Kurt Zouma unlikely to prolong his stay at the club. It is believed that Chelsea’s apparent transfer ban has complicated negotiations for the Frenchman’s permanent deal at Goodison Park.

Furthermore, last summer’s star recruit Yerry Mina has struggled with both form and injuries. That leaves Everton with Michael Keane as their only reliable defensive option next season. Hence, Juanpe could be a valuable addition to the team.

As iterated earlier, Juanpe is an excellent reader of the game and is known for his aerial prowess. His aggression also makes him a tailor-made fit for the physically demanding Premier League and the Spaniard can add more solidity to the Everton backline. And for a fee of just £6 million, he could turn out to be a bargain for the Toffees, should Girona accept their offer.
