According to a recent report by the Sun, Liverpool midfielder Rafael Camacho has declined the opportunity to extend his stay at Anfield. The same source has revealed that the Portuguese wonderkid has rejected a new five-year contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of the next campaign.

Camacho’s Inability To Secure A First-Team Place Under Klopp

Camacho has played in just one Premier League match this season as a substitute, but he did feature heavily in Liverpool’s FA Cup defeat away at Wolverhampton Wanderers back in January. Even though he is still not ready for a regular starting berth at Merseyside, the Portuguese playmaker has the potential to become a success story in the Premier League.

The Portuguese Talent’s Rejection: Big Blow For The Reds?

The fact that he is not willing to commit his long term future will be a bitter pill to swallow for Jurgen Klopp and his quest to establish long-term success at Anfield. The youngster came through the youth ranks of Sporting CP before he went on to play for Manchester City’s youth teams. Camacho decided to make a switch to Liverpool in the summer of 2016.

What Does Camacho Offer On The Pitch?

The 18-year-old has gradually worked his way up the club’s youth ranks but has still not managed to break into Klopp’s first-team. The Reds starlet boasts decent pace and is a powerful dribbler with the ball at his feet. He can also pass the ball well and is capable of finding the back of the net from long range.

End Of The Road For Camacho At Anfield?

However, Camacho is still quite a raw talent who needs to continue improving if he wants to fulfil his true potential over the next few years. His reluctance to extend his Liverpool contract indicates that maybe the player could be thinking about moving on to greener pastures when his contract with the Merseyside club runs out next year.

Losing Camacho shouldn’t affect Klopp’s long-term plans at the red half of Merseyside too much as the current Liverpool squad is strong enough to be successful in the coming years. Maybe, Klopp should consider selling the Portuguese starlet this summer rather than risk losing him for free in the summer of 2020.
