Steven Gerrard recently stated that he would look to make some signings in the upcoming summer transfer window and he specifically indicated that he needs players with a bit of magic. Rangers have often struggled to open up teams who have defended in numbers, and that is the reason why they find themselves 11 points behind Celtic in the table.
One such player who can provide a bit of magic is Greg Docherty. The midfielder is currently on loan to League One outfit Shrewsbury Town where he has been impressive. Docherty has already made 14 appearances for Rangers, but he failed to establish himself at Ibrox.
However, there is no doubt that his impressive stint at Shrewsbury will catch Gerrard’s eye. The player himself has often maintained that he wants to succeed at Rangers. On his current situation, the midfielder said (Daily Record), ”To be fair, the midfield at Rangers is strong at the moment but I’m realistic, and you’ve got to back yourself. I’ve watched them in the big games this season, and it gives me that fire that I really want to push on.”
”I feel like I’m a better player, but it’s up to me to show that. I’m not going to get ahead of myself. I’ll fight and try my best. The contract is there, and I’ve got time on my side.”
The former Scottish u-21 international is spot on about his situation. Midfield is one of the areas where the Bears have plenty of options, and Docherty isn’t going to find it easy to fight his way back into the team.
Why Docherty might be considered for the next season?
Rangers have Lassana Coulibaly and Steven Davis only on loan spells so it is not clear whether Gerrard would offer either of the two a permanent deal. As of now, Davis will be the favourite to get a permanent deal after his recent showings. But there could be a space vacated after the exit of Coulibaly.
Why Gerrard cannot ignore Docherty?
The 22-year-old has managed nine goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances this season, and that goes to show the kind of impact he has had in England. A 20 goal contribution from midfield is impressive numbers, and maybe the Scotsman can be that creative piece of the jigsaw which Rangers desperately need.
It’s true that Docherty has produced those numbers in the English third tier, but you can only perform on the test you are given. Therefore Gerrard should consider him for the next season after he returns to Glasgow.
